“Trade between the USA and Canada is very highly integrated. Canadians have voted Carney into government under the expectation that his distinguished expertise in matters of international economics will assist in navigating the economic and political challenges presented by the Trump administration’s trade war.
“The most remarkable facet of the Canadian election has been the impact of Trump’s tariff threats on bolstering the Liberal party of Canada. It recovered more than 25 points (on current numbers) to push past the Conservatives, who were widely anticipated to win. The ‘trump effect’ led Canadians to choose continuity over change, and technocracy over populism.”
Carney delivered a strong victory speech on Tuesday morning, stating “Who’s ready to stand up for Canada with me?’ – Dr Zebrowski explains how quickly the new Canadian Prime Minister will have to act though to stop his public support from waning soon after his success.
“The challenges facing Carney are pretty formidable. Urgent action will be required to protect the Canadian economy from the worst outcomes of Trump’s trade war, and, if present polls are correct, Carney will need to do this from the weakened position of a minority government. If Carney delays in restoring confidence in the Canadian economy his public support could quickly evaporate."
